Albion Farms and Fisheries has been a CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) Federal Inspected Plant since 1983. The Albion Establishment Number is 230. There is a CFIA Inspector onsite daily, who performs the CVS (Compliance Verification System) tasks to ensure the Albion Farms and Fisheries Food Safety Programs meet the Meat Inspection Regulations.

HACCP-logoHACCP Program

Albion Farms and Fisheries have had its HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) Program in place since November 1, 1999. This program is recognized by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

Recall Program

An important piece of our HACCP Program is the Recall Program. Albion Farms and Fisheries are able to track and trace all raw materials used and all products produced from these materials. If for any reason a product needs to be recalled, Albion is able to contact every customer with further direction.

E coli 0157:H7 Testing

Albion Farms and Fisheries source all raw beef materials for grinding from reputable suppliers only. These suppliers are required to test all of their raw materials for Ecoli 0157:H7 and receive a “negative” result before shipping to AF&F. Certificates of Analysis (COA) are kept on file for all raw beef materials purchased.

3rd Party Audit

A number of current larger customers require Albion Farms and Fisheries to have a Food Safety Quality Assurance Audit performed annually.  Guelph Food Technology Centre (GFTC) performs an audit once per year on the Albion written program followed by an on-site tour. These audits bring food safety in the Food Industry to new levels all the time.

Our Commitment to Community

Albion Farms and Fisheries not only takes pride in the products offered but believe in an obligation to work with and help the communities where we work, live and play. From working with the Habitat for Humanity, donating and delivering food to help feed the needy, or helping to clean local river systems, Albion is committed to making a difference.

Best Aquaculture Practices

As the first Seafood Distributor in Canada to become Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certified, Albion is proud to highlight our association with these standards.

Seafood buyers and suppliers globally prefer to source seafood from third-party-certified facilities for a variety of environmentally and socially responsible policy reasons. Working with foodservice, institutional and particularly retail buyers, the Global Aquaculture Alliance recognized a need for a comprehensive set of standards so the BAP program was created.

The comprehensive BAP standards offer:

  • BAP standards encompass the entire aquaculture production chain, including farms, processing plants, hatcheries and feed mills.
  • All standards address every key element of responsible aquaculture, including environmental responsibility, social responsibility, food safety, animal welfare and traceability.
  • The seafood processing plant standards are benchmarked against the latest Global Food Safety Initiative food-safety requirements.
  • A market development team actively promotes the BAP program to retailers and foodservice operators worldwide on behalf of BAP-certified facilities.

Live Tanks and Filtration System

The Albion Farms and Fisheries high-tech modern live tank system allows for the storing of over tens of thousands of pounds of lobster, crabs, oysters, scallops, mussels, clams and abalone in a wet storage system that mimics their natural environment. We utilize a closed circulation system that is HACCP approved by the CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency). A complex network of piping, pumps, sand and bio-filters, cooling towers, ultraviolet sterilizers keeps the water quality at its peak condition. The water is tested regularly on site to ensure optimum holding conditions. This live system permits our shellfish processing team to pack the liveliest shellfish possible for Albion Farms and Fisheries customers all across North America and Asia.

Seafood Quality Management Team

Albion Farms and Fisheries take food safety seriously, and is a federally registered fish processing establishment. The Albion Farms and Fisheries HACCP, Food Safety and Quality System have been certified by various domestic and internationally recognized regulatory and accredited auditing agencies through annual audits:

Even at the start of the sourcing process, we work directly with fishermen, fishing boats and firms to improve pre/post-harvesting techniques insuring the finest quality fish and shellfish available.

In the Albion Farms and Fisheries facilities, an ozonated water cleaning system is used in every stage of processing; ensuring product cleanliness, bacterial elimination and a chemical free environment. Our plant personnel undergo continuous training to meet and exceed strict industry standards.

Albion Farms and Fisheries Quality Assurance and Receiving Teams focus on organoleptic assessment of all incoming products using Quality Index method (QIM) and CODEX fish and fishery products. We also focus on chain of custody (COC), CFIA-Fish Inspection Regulations (FIR), Food and Drug Act and Regulations (FDA&R) and Consumer Packaging and Labeling Act and Regulations (CP&L). Only those products that are able to pass through these strict criteria are considered for Albion Farms and Fisheries product line.

Our Commitment to Sustainability

Sustainability is an issue that is of increasing concern to our customers and to the public in general. Albion Farms and Fisheries has been an industry leader for the past several years on this subject — always focusing on the issues first. In fact, Albion voluntarily discontinued selling Chilean sea bass in 2005 due to the overwhelming evidence of overfishing. Sustainability and related issues concerning seafood are a key focus for Albion Farms and Fisheries now and in the future. Given this viewpoint Albion currently works very closely with the local Ocean Wise program, the nationwide Seachoice organization, and the global organization MSC (Marine Stewardship Council).

By sourcing from reputable, traceable fisheries we can inform customers of the exact area and method that all products are harvested in the event that there may be concerns with that fishery. The Albion Farms and Fisheries CTS division imports specific products globally because they adhere to the following sustainability principles:

  1. Abundant and resilient fish population
  2. Well-managed fishery
  3. Fishing methods that minimize by-catch, and have minimal effect on habitat and the ocean floor

We continue to source and introduce new products that meet these exacting sustainability criteria. Although our seafood offerings are not 100% fully certified Ocean Wise, the long-term strategy is to grow the list of those products that are.

At Albion Farms and Fisheries, packaging is just as important as the product itself. We are just as committed to reducing the amount of waste generated in the production and packaging process. Ask us about the Albion blue bin distribution program.
